Baltimore Bridge Collapse: A cargo ship, manned entirely by Indian crew members, collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, resulting in a catastrophic collapse. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, saw numerous vehicles and potentially up to 20 individuals plunge into the river below.
The ship, identified as the ‘Dali’ and registered under Grace Ocean Pte Ltd with a Singapore flag, was navigating down the Patapsco River en route to Sri Lanka when it struck a pylon of the bridge. The impact caused a significant portion of the bridge to crumple into the river, creating a harrowing scene.
Fortunately, all 22 crew members, including the two pilots, were safely accounted for, with no reports of injuries or pollution, according to the ship management company, Synergy Marine Group.
Meanwhile, a construction crew working on the bridge suffered casualties, with eight individuals falling into the icy waters of the river. Rescue efforts managed to save two individuals, while six remained unaccounted for. The collision also sparked a fire on the vessel, engulfing the scene in thick black smoke.
Eyewitnesses captured the terrifying moment on video, likening it to scenes from an action movie. Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott described it as an “unthinkable tragedy” and declared a state of emergency in response to the bridge collapse.
